Keisha Young, the Morgan State University student shown in the video, said it should never have happened. Video footage of a young Black woman being dragged down the stairs of a Washington D.C. sports bar has emerged, prompting protests and a boycott of the venue involved.
“I feel like, even separating race from that, no man should handle a woman that way. That should never be right, ”she said Monday in a video call with her attorney. Video of the incident, taken by a passerby inside the bar, was shared on Instagram by Young's mother on Monday.

Keisha Young Dragged at DC Bar Nellie
A college student who has dragged down a flight of stairs at a bar during DC Pride celebrations says the encounter left her injured and believes that bar security mistook her for someone else. The bar, Nellie's Sports Bar, apologized to her and said in a statement that they had fired the "independent security provider hired to protect our guests during Pride Week." Management will close the bar for a week afterward.
Cell phone video shows a janitor in Nellie pulling a black woman down a staircase Saturday night. The video went viral and sparked protests outside the U Street NW bar the following night. Young came out on Saturday to celebrate D.C. Pride. At Nellie's, a porter mistook her for someone else, who tried to carry a bottle to the bar, she said.
The gorilla dragged her down the stairs while the people at the foot of the stairs screamed and tried to push him away from her. Young left Nellie's with "bruises all over the place," she said.
"I'm pretty sure I had a concussion, the way I was really throwing up. I had a really bad headache and everything was dizzy. I couldn't really focus," she said.
Her attorney, Brandon Burrell, called it "tragic."
There was no call to 911 for help or a police report, but the incident caught the attention of Mayor Muriel Bowser.

“Obviously, entrepreneurs enforce the rules in their restaurants. But they are not allowed to assault anyone, "she said Monday.
Nellie's said in an opening statement that management was "incredibly upset and shocked to see what happened." In a second statement, management said:
"Nellie's Sports Bar has terminated, effective immediately, the independent security provider hired to protect our guests during Pride Week. Our investigation into the matter is ongoing and we will cooperate with any police investigation; however, we do not need to wait for the conclusion of the investigation before taking decisive action. We sincerely apologize to everyone who witnessed the horrific events this past weekend. No matter what behavior has occurred before, there is no justification for mistreating and disrespecting one of our guests.
What we can say is that we have listened to the concerns of the BIPOC and LGBTQ communities. Nellie's will be closed this week while we assess this unfortunate situation, although we will continue to pay all non-security personnel their normal salary. In the meantime, we will use this time to listen and understand what else we can do to create the safe and friendly atmosphere our guests have come to expect from Nellie's Sports Bar for the past 14 years. "
The D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Regulatory Administration will investigate the incident, a spokesman said Monday.
