A Daytona Beach police officer was shot in the head Wednesday night while he was investigating a suspicious vehicle, prompting a multi-agency manhunt for the shooter, police said.

By mid-morning Wednesday, the search had expanded to another state, but authorities did not provide details on where they were looking for 29-year-old Othal Wallace. Several highways were closed in the area as hundreds of officers from various Central Florida agencies searched for the man accused of shooting a Daytona officer overnight.

Police said the officer, whose name has not been released, was investigating the suspicious vehicle in his patrol area around 8:50 p.m. Wednesday near Kingston Avenue when things changed quickly.

Police have released body camera video of the incident showing Wallace standing and getting out of his car as the officer repeatedly tells him to sit down. The two then fight before a shot is heard and the officer falls to the ground.

The police chief said the officer is 26 years old and has been in the force for three years. The officer is in critical condition after undergoing surgery at Halifax Hospital. He was showing some improvement but has a long way to go, the police chief said.

"I am extremely heartbroken, especially as this particular police officer, knowing him if he succeeds, will do everything in his power to get back to work and continue to serve the citizens of this community," said Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young.

The chief said he had more than 500 officers responding to the area and that the county was temporarily closed. U.S. Marshals have also joined the search for Wallace. Three agencies had helicopters in the air to assist in the search, including the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

There is a $ 100,000 reward for anyone with information leading to Wallace's capture. It is unknown if Wallace is still in Volusia County. Wallace is considered armed and dangerous and is believed to be driving a gray 2016 Honda HRV with California registration number 7TNX532.

The police chief said hours after the shooting, a search warrant was executed where Wallace's family lives, and investigators found three ballistic vests, several high-capacity magazines, a firearm, a rifle, a semiautomatic pistol, and cartridges boxes.

This is just the latest in a series of recent shootings involving police in Volusia County. Earlier this month, two foster children were involved in a shooting with officers. A 14-year-old girl was shot and survived. No deputy was injured.

And two weeks ago, investigators say a man ambushed officers in DeBarry. He was shot and survived, but no officer was injured.

Authorities released a 29-second clip from the officer's body camera. The anonymous police officer can be seen approaching the suspect that he is sitting in a parked car prior to the shooting.

"How are you doing? Do you live here?" the policeman asked the suspect, who immediately got out of his car and stood up. "What's going on? What's going on now? Don't do this. Why are you asking me if I live here?" The suspect said as the officer repeatedly asked him to sit back in his car.

"Do you live here, yes or no?" The officer said before a brief fight broke out between the suspect and the officer. The last thing heard before the shot was the officer yelling “Stop! Stop man! "

The officer was taken to Halifax Medical Center in critical condition. The suspect has been identified by Daytona Beach police as 29-year-old Othal Wallace. Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young tweeted overnight: "There is no change in the status of my hero who was shot in the line of duty."

"He is fighting while all of us pray," he wrote. "The persecution of the coward responsible for this continues."
