A 10-year-old boy has described how a shark was thrown at him three times while snorkeling, leaving him with two deep cuts on his foot. Jackson Bartlett was diving with his father at Five Finger Reef near Coral Bay in Western Australia on Friday morning when a shadow followed him into the water.
"It was because of me, it failed," Jackson told 9News from his hospital bed. "Then he went for me, took one of my fins, then he went for me and took a fin and my leg."
The 2-meter bronze whaler left two nasty cuts on the schoolboy's foot, cutting him from ankle to toe.
"He was bleeding at (that) moment ... I thought he was going to die because he was really scary," he said. Jackon's father, Blake Bartlett, told 9News that he felt like he was running on water as he rushed to carry his injured son to shore.
"We were probably out of 75 meters, so it was a long way, and he felt like a lifetime," Bartlett said. Off-duty medics on the beach gave Jackson first aid before he was flown to Perth Children's Hospital. Ever since he bit me, I've wanted to remove one of his teeth so I can remember him, "Jackson said. I still like sharks. But I don't want to swim too close to big ones like that.
"I want to surf again. I love the ocean. Jackson is expected to be released from the hospital tomorrow. The Bartletts have been traveling Australia for the past nine months. Jackson and his family are expected to fly back to Sydney this week, where he will spend time recuperating, before returning to Washington to resume his travels.
