Charges - Arrested
Cohen Bennett Hancz-Barron got a chance in February to turn his life around by receiving permission to serve the balance of a six-year robbery sentence from Starke County at Home with Hope in Lafayette, according to court records.
Instead of addressing his life's issues, Fort Wayne police suspect Hancz-Barron killed three children and one woman early Wednesday in the 2900 block of Gay Street in Fort Wayne, Fort Wayne Police Sgt. Chris Felton said Wednesday afternoon in Lafayette.
Through tips, police tracked Hancz-Barron to an apartment in the 500 block of Gordon Court in Romney Meadows on the southwest side of Lafayette, Felton said. Beginning about 1 p.m., Fort Wayne and Indiana State Police began speeding towards Lafayette. About 4:45 p.m., the Indiana State Police response team rushed into the apartment and arrested Hancz-Barron. No one was injured.

In addition to being wanted on suspicion of four killings, Hancz-Barron is wanted on a warrant issued in late April in Starke County for probation violation for walking away from Home with Hope and supervision by Tippecanoe County Community Corrections.
He also is wanted on suspicion of stealing a 2010 Ford pickup truck after the Gay Street killings, Felton said. Police found the pickup truck parked on Northchester Lane, a block south of Gordon Court, Felton said. After locating Hancz-Barron, Indiana State Police and Fort Wayne officers sped across the state to Romney Meadows in southeast Lafayette Wednesday afternoon.
Fort Wayne and Indiana State Police staged in the areas near Romney Meadows. Meanwhile, other officers watched the front and back doors of the Gordon Court apartment from inside the apartment complex. Hancz-Barron's hair appeared to be colored red and was in a man-bun.
Police brought Hancz-Barron out the back door of the apartment and searched him on Northchester Lane away from the commotion that was forming around the front of the apartment as residents began watching from their front doors.
