Jacqueline Zangrilli died in the crash on Route 202 in Montebello, which also left the driver, 17, and three other teen passengers injured, WABC reported. The driver was allegedly speeding in a 2003 Jaguar sedan when he lost control and struck a utility pole, the report said, citing police.

Car Crash - Cause of Death

Jacqueline Zangrilli, 16, was killed early Saturday in a single-car crash in Montebello on Route 202. A 17-year-old boy who was behind the wheel has been arrested and accused of drunken driving.

Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home in Ramapo is handling arrangements for Zangrilli. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home at 177 Route 59.

Mass is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 129 Lafeyette Ave. in Sufferen. Private cremation service will follow.

Zangrilli's mother Laura is a teacher in the Pearl River School District, according to a letter the district sent to the community.

"Our thoughts and prayers are united with those of the grieving family that they may have the strength needed in this time of great sadness," the district said. "...Understanding how difficult it is to comprehend the sudden and tragic loss of a young life, our counseling and support staff are prepared to assist our students as needed."

Rockland BOCES posted on Facebook asking students and staff to show the Suffern Central School District support by wearing Suffern Mountie colors of blue and white on Monday.

"All BOCES student and staff are encouraged to stand united with our Rockland County school districts in this effort," the post said.

Zangrilli was one of five teens in a car that crashed into a utility pole between Copeland Drive and Viola Road in Montebello around 2:50 a.m. Saturday. The vehicle was found by Ramapo police on its side. Zangrilli was pronounced dead at the scene.

Suffern and communities throughout Rockland are mourning the girl's loss. Many people and organizations changed their social media profile pictures to the Suffern High School logo with the words "Suffern Strong" and "#MountiePride."

Viola Elementary School in Suffern tweeted on Sunday that Zangrilli was a former student.

"Please consider donating and joining us (Monday) as we wear blue/white to show our love and support of the Zangrilli family," the school tweeted.

The Suffern hockey Twitter account asked the community for support.

"The Suffern community's heart is broken but we are strongest when we're united," the team tweeted.

In a Facebook post, the village of Hillburn said it "shares in the sadness and pain that is felt by the families, friends and students of the Suffern Central School District. We extend our deepest condolences to the Zangrilli family."

The other four students who were in the car with Zangrilli were transported to either Westchester Medical Center or Nyack Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. All of the teenagers were under the age of 18 and students at Suffern High School.

Suspect

The driver, whose name has not been released, faces charges of second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault, first-degree vehicular assault, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, and driving while intoxicated.

He was arraigned virtually on Saturday in Rockland County Youth Superior Court. He was released and is scheduled to return to court on Monday.

The Rockland County District Attorney's Office assisted police at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
